WHAT IS THE CURRENCY AND EXCHANGE RATE IN COLOMBIA?
The currency in Colombia is Colombian pesos (COP). The conversion rate fluctuates daily so you can check the most up-to-date rate with Google by searching “USD to COP”. The most common bills are 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, and 20,000 pesos. While many places accept credit card, there are also places that only accept cash so we recommend visiting an ATM upon arrival and having some cash on you at all times.
IS MEDELLIN SAFE?
📍 From our experience, yes. Despite its reputation, times have changed significantly. I’d invite you to do some further research if you feel concerned for any reason at all. That being said, inequality is still high and petty crime like pickpocketing is still relatively common. As Colombians would say – “no hay que dar papaya”, which literally translates to “you should not give papaya” but figuratively means just do not show off and give anyone a reason to bother you.
